With
the NBA playoffs upon us it might be fun to review the standout
performances down through pro-basketball history.
To
find the most valuable scorers in each postseason we can rely on 'NET Points'.
Instead of looking at the players with the most points or highest shooting percentages a metric like NET
Points combines both. Scoring volume is represented by points. Shooting efficiency is represented by shot attempts. To find NET Points just subtract
shots from points scored.
When looking at the scoring leaders take note of the margin between players within each playoffs. It could
be argued that Elgin Baylor's 1960 was more dominant
than Wilt Chamberlain's five years later even though he had fewer NET Points. This is because
the NBA as a whole shot a higher percentage in '65 giving Wilt some
serious competition. The 76'ers big man produced two more NET Points than Jerry West
in those playoffs while in '60 Baylor produced fifteen more
than runner-up Bob Pettit.
